Yellowhead Jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons / Yellowhead Jawfish)
A fascinating and highly characterful marine species, the Yellowhead Jawfish is recognised by its bright yellow head, shimmering blue body highlights, and unique burrowing behaviour. It spends much of its time constructing and maintaining burrows, making it an entertaining and rewarding addition to peaceful marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with calm tankmates such as clownfish, gobies, blennies, and small wrasses. Avoid aggressive or highly active species that may stress or outcompete it.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and most invertebrates, making it ideal for reef systems.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped seafood. Will also accept quality marine pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily for best health and activity.

- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and a deep sandy substrate for natural burrowing behaviour. Known jumpers, so a secure lid is essential.
Top Tip:
Provide a deep sand bed mixed with small rubble pieces to allow natural burrow construction. Always use a tightly fitted lid, as jawfish can jump when startled.
