Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys polylepis)
A graceful and highly sought-after species, the Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish is known for its soft white body accented with a bold yellow dorsal section and pyramid-shaped marking. Unlike many butterflyfish, this species is far more reef-friendly, making it a popular choice for larger reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. An excellent community fish that mixes well with tangs, angelfish, wrasse, anthias, clownfish, and other non-aggressive species. Can be kept singly, in pairs, or even in small groups in larger aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Generally reef-safe. Unlike most butterflyfish, it rarely nips at corals as it naturally feeds in the water column rather than on coral polyps.
Diet:
Planktivore – thrives on a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed little and often to mimic natural feeding behaviour.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 250L
Care Level:
Moderate – generally hardy once established but benefits from a stable, mature aquarium with good flow and open swimming space.
Top Tip:
Best kept in small groups in larger tanks to showcase natural schooling behaviour and create a stunning display.
