Description

Yellow Fin Spiny Eel – A Unique and Elegant Bottom-Dweller
(Macrognathus aculeatus)

The Yellow Fin Spiny Eel (Macrognathus aculeatus) is an intriguing species that combines beauty with unique behavior, making it a fascinating addition to any freshwater aquarium. Known for its elongated, eel-like body, and the striking yellow fins that give it its name, this bottom-dwelling fish is a true oddball. With its peaceful nature and fascinating movements, the Yellow Fin Spiny Eel adds both elegance and intrigue to your tank.

Key Features:

  • Distinctive Yellow Fins: Vibrant yellow dorsal and caudal fins contrast beautifully with its dark body

  • Elongated Body: Slender and eel-like, perfect for slinking through crevices and hiding spots

  • Moderate Size: Grows up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length

  • Peaceful Behavior: Shy and non-aggressive, ideal for community tanks with similar-sized fish

Tank Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 100 liters (25 gallons)

  • Temperature: 24°C–28°C (75°F–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Prefers a soft, sandy substrate to mimic its natural riverbed habitat and allow for burrowing

  • Needs hiding spots such as rocks, caves, and plants to feel secure

  • Moderate filtration is essential, as this species tends to produce a fair amount of waste

Compatibility:

  • Peaceful and shy, best kept with small to medium-sized, non-aggressive tankmates

  • Ideal companions include small catfish, peaceful cichlids, shrimp, and tetras

  • Can be kept with other species of spiny eels or peaceful fish, but avoid overly aggressive or large fish that might stress it

  • Not suitable for tanks with very small fish, as it may view them as prey

Feeding Tips:

  • Carnivorous—prefers live or frozen foods like worms, small fish, and shrimp

  • Can also accept sinking pellets or frozen foods like bloodworms and daphnia

  • Feed 2–3 times a week, as overfeeding can lead to poor water quality

  • Make sure food is placed near the bottom or in hiding spots where it feels safe to eat
