Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus / Yellow Boxfish)
A unique and highly recognisable marine species, the Yellow Boxfish is famous for its cube-shaped body and bright yellow coloration (especially in juveniles). Despite its slow, awkward swimming style, it is a hardy and fascinating display fish for large marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful but delicate. Best kept with calm, non-aggressive tankmates such as tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and angelfish. Should not be housed with aggressive or fin-nipping species, as stress can trigger toxin release.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Generally does not nip corals, but may consume small invertebrates such as shrimp, snails, and worms. Also produces a toxin when highly stressed or dying, which can be dangerous in closed systems.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, algae-based foods, and quality marine pellets. Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 300L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires stable water conditions, gentle tankmates, and careful handling. Sensitive to stress and poor water quality.
Top Tip:
Avoid overcrowded or highly aggressive tanks. Provide plenty of open swimming space and stable parameters to minimise stress, as boxfish are highly sensitive despite their hardy appearance.
