Description
White Tail Kole Tang (Ctenochaetus flavicauda)
A rare and eye-catching tang, the White Tail Kole Tang (flavicauda) is distinguished by its deep blue-black body and bright white tail, creating a striking contrast that makes it a standout in any marine aquarium. Known for its active grazing behaviour, it is both beautiful and functional in keeping algae under control.
Compatibility:
Peaceful but territorial with conspecifics or other similar tangs. Best kept with robust tankmates such as angelfish, other tangs, and wrasse. Avoid very small or timid species that may be stressed by its activity.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it ideal for live rock and reef setups.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily grazes on algae. Provide a varied diet of marine algae, spirulina flakes or pellets, and occasional frozen or dried vegetable matter. Feed multiple times per day to maintain colour and health.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires a mature aquarium with stable water parameters and plenty of swimming space. Sensitive to poor water quality.
Top Tip:
Provide abundant live rock and open swimming areas to encourage natural grazing and reduce territorial disputes. Introducing into a well-established tank improves acclimation and reduces stress.
