Wartskin Anglerfish (Antennarius maculatus / Warty Frogfish)
The Wartskin Anglerfish, also known as the Warty Frogfish, is one of the marine hobby’s most unusual ambush predators. Its heavily textured skin, irregular markings, and remarkable camouflage allow it to blend into rockwork and coral surroundings. Colouration is highly variable and may include white, yellow, orange, red, brown, and combinations of contrasting patches and spots.
Compatibility:
Predatory. Best kept alone or with carefully selected tankmates considerably larger than the anglerfish. It can swallow surprisingly large prey and may attempt to eat fish approaching its own body size. It may also be vulnerable to aggressive fish that nip at its lure.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Generally harmless to corals, but not safe with small fish, shrimp, or other crustaceans, which may be viewed as prey. An excellent candidate for a dedicated species aquarium.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on shrimp, krill, squid, and appropriately sized pieces of marine seafood. Specimens should ideally be trained to accept frozen foods offered with feeding tongs rather than relying on live feeder fish. Feed approximately 2–3 times per week, avoiding excessively large meals.

Top Tip:
Wartskin Anglerfish are incredibly effective ambush predators, so never assume another fish is safe simply because it appears too large to eat. A dedicated species setup is often the safest and most rewarding way to keep this fascinating fish.
