Description
Vampire Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii “Vampire” / Desjardini Tang Variant)
A striking and rare tang variant, the Vampire Tang is recognised by its dramatic dark body contrasted with bold orange fins and subtle patterning, making it a true showpiece in larger aquariums. Its active grazing behaviour and stunning appearance make it highly sought-after by marine aquarists.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as tangs, angelfish, and wrasses. Can be territorial with other tangs, especially similar-shaped species. Avoid small or timid fish.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it suitable for most reef setups.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Provide a varied diet including algae sheets, spirulina flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based frozen foods. Multiple feedings per day are recommended for optimal health and colouration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires a mature aquarium with stable water parameters and plenty of swimming space. Benefits from ample live rock for grazing.
Top Tip:
Introduce carefully into an established tank with robust tankmates. Regular algae-based feeding helps maintain its striking dark body and orange fins while reducing territorial behaviour.
