African Giant Fan Shrimp
Atya gabonensis (formerly Atyopsis gabonensis)
The African Giant Fan Shrimp, also commonly known as the Vampire Shrimp or Gabon Fan Shrimp, is a fascinating freshwater invertebrate recognised for its impressive size, powerful legs and unusual filter-feeding behaviour. Despite its intimidating appearance and common name, this remarkable shrimp is completely peaceful and poses no threat to fish or other aquarium inhabitants.
Originating from West and Central Africa, these incredible shrimp can display a variety of colours, including blue, purple, grey and brown, with colouration varying between individuals and changing as they mature or moult.
Unlike typical freshwater shrimp, African Giant Fan Shrimp use specialised fan-shaped appendages to collect tiny food particles suspended in flowing water. Their unique appearance and fascinating feeding habits make them an outstanding addition to mature tropical aquariums.
