Description
Valentini Puffer (Canthigaster valentini / Saddled Pufferfish)
A small but charismatic marine puffer, the Valentini Puffer is known for its bold patterning, bright yellow markings, and curious, intelligent behaviour. It is a popular choice for nano-to-medium marine aquariums due to its manageable size and engaging personality.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with moderately robust tankmates such as wrasses, clownfish, tangs, and dwarf angelfish. May nip fins of slow or long-finned fish and will often target small invertebrates.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Does not typically harm corals but will eat small invertebrates such as snails, shrimp, and crabs. Best suited to fish-only or carefully planned reef systems without ornamental inverts.
Diet:
Omnivore – requires a varied diet including squid, mussel, clam, krill, mysis shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets. Hard-shelled foods are essential to help naturally wear down their continuously growing beak. Feed 1–2 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once established but requires careful feeding, stable water conditions, and attention to tankmate selection due to invertebrate predation.
Top Tip:
Include hard foods like clam on shell or crustaceans regularly to prevent beak overgrowth. Avoid housing with ornamental shrimp or snails you wish to keep long-term.
