Description
Three-Stripe Humbug Damselfish (Dascyllus aruanus)
A bold and energetic marine species, the Three-Stripe Humbug Damselfish is instantly recognisable by its striking black and white vertical stripes. Known for its lively personality and hardiness, this species is ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking to add colour and activity to their aquarium.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. While peaceful when young, adults can become territorial, especially in smaller tanks. Mixes well with robust species like clownfish, gobies, and certain tangs, but caution is advised when keeping with more timid fish.
Reef Compatibility:
Generally reef-safe, but may nip at small invertebrates or coral polyps. Suitable for live rock and reef setups with careful monitoring.
Diet:
Omnivore – thrives on a varied diet of high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. Feed multiple times daily to maintain vibrant coloration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy and adaptable, but benefits from a well-established tank with plenty of hiding spots to reduce territorial stress.
Top Tip:
Provide caves and crevices in the rockwork to allow retreat and reduce aggression. Best kept in slightly larger aquariums to help manage territorial behaviour as they mature.
