Description
Tailless Whip Scorpion – Damon johnstonii
A truly captivating and prehistoric-looking invertebrate, Damon johnstonii is one of the most impressive Tailless Whip Scorpions available in the hobby. Known for its large size, flattened body, and incredibly long sensory front legs, this species is both fascinating and completely harmless—lacking venom and any form of sting. Its slow, deliberate movements and nocturnal hunting behaviour make it an exceptional display species.
Habitat
Originating from East Africa, Damon johnstonii thrives in warm, humid environments with plenty of vertical surfaces to hide and climb.
- Enclosure: Tall, arboreal-style enclosure with good ventilation
- Substrate: Moist coco fibre or soil mix
- Temperature: 24–28°C
- Humidity: High (70–85%)
- Decor: Cork bark slabs, vertical hides, branches, and tight crevices are essential
Feeding
A nocturnal ambush predator, this species uses its whip-like front legs to detect vibrations before striking prey with powerful pedipalps.
- Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, and other appropriately sized insects
-
Feeding frequency:
- Juveniles: 2–3 times per week
- Adults: 1–2 times per week
- Remove uneaten food to maintain a clean, stress-free environment
General Care
Damon johnstonii is relatively hardy when kept in the correct conditions, though it is best suited to keepers with some experience.
- Temperament: Shy, fast, and non-aggressive
- Handling: Not recommended due to delicate legs and quick movements
- Lifespan: Around 7–10 years
- Maintenance: Regular misting combined with good airflow to prevent stagnant, damp conditions
