Sulphur Goby (Cryptocentrus leptocephalus / Sulphur Watchman Goby)

The Sulphur Goby is a striking sand-dwelling marine fish, recognised for its vibrant sulphur-yellow head, pale body, and alert watchman behaviour. Peaceful and full of personality, it spends much of its time perched at the entrance of its burrow and can form a fascinating symbiotic partnership with pistol shrimp.

Compatibility:
Peaceful. An excellent choice for community reef aquariums, mixing well with clownfish, blennies, cardinalfish, fairy wrasses, gobies, and other non-aggressive species. May be territorial towards similar watchman gobies unless kept as a compatible pair.

Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely safe with corals and ornamental invertebrates. Its burrowing behaviour is natural and generally does not disturb established reef structures.

Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton. Offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and quality sinking marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–27°C
  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Minimum Tank Size: 80L

Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy once established but requires a mature aquarium with stable water quality, a fine sand substrate, and plenty of rockwork to create secure burrows.

Top Tip:
A fine sand bed is essential for natural burrowing behaviour. Pairing the Sulphur Goby with a compatible pistol shrimp creates one of the most fascinating symbiotic relationships in the marine aquarium hobby, with the shrimp maintaining the burrow while the goby stands guard.
