Description
Strawberry Pygmy Basslet (Pseudochromis porphyreus / Strawberry Dottyback)
A brilliantly coloured and highly active marine fish, the Strawberry Pygmy Basslet is admired for its intense pink-red coloration and bold personality. Small yet eye-catching, it adds vibrant colour and movement to reef and community aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with moderately robust tankmates such as clownfish, wrasses, gobies, and tangs. Can become territorial toward similarly shaped fish, smaller gobies, or other dottybacks, especially in smaller aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Harmless to corals, though it may prey on very small ornamental shrimp or tiny crustaceans.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily for optimal health and vibrant coloration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 60–80L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy, adaptable, and suitable for most established marine aquariums. Benefits from stable water conditions and plenty of rockwork for shelter and territory.
Top Tip:
Provide multiple caves and crevices to help reduce territorial behaviour. Keeping the fish well-fed and housed with confident tankmates helps maintain a balanced community aquarium.
