Description
Spotted Grunt (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides / Harlequin Sweetlips)
A striking and highly distinctive marine fish, the Spotted Grunt (commonly known as the Harlequin Sweetlips) is recognised for its bold spotted juvenile patterning that gradually transitions into a more elegant adult coloration. Its slow, graceful swimming style makes it a true showpiece in large marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust, non-aggressive species such as tangs, larger wrasses, angelfish, and triggerfish in suitably large systems. Should not be housed with very small fish that may be mistaken as food.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Generally does not damage corals, but may consume small ornamental invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs once mature. Best suited to fish-only or carefully planned mixed systems.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on a varied diet including mysis shrimp, krill, squid, mussel, clam, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily, ensuring a varied protein-rich diet.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 600L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a large, stable aquarium with excellent filtration and careful tankmate selection due to adult size and feeding requirements.
Top Tip:
Be aware of dramatic juvenile-to-adult colour change. Ensure a spacious aquarium with open swimming areas, as this species grows large and requires room to thrive long-term.
