Description

Socotra Island Blue Baboon Tarantula (Monocentropus balfouri)

The Socotra Island Blue Baboon Tarantula is one of the most spectacular Old World tarantulas in the hobby. Native to the isolated island of Socotra, this stunning species is renowned for its shimmering metallic blue legs, creamy tan carapace, and fascinating social behaviour. While fast and defensive, Monocentropus balfouri is highly prized by experienced keepers and is one of the few tarantula species that can often be successfully maintained in communal setups.

Habitat

Originating from the dry, rocky landscapes of Socotra, this species thrives in a warm enclosure with good ventilation and plenty of hiding places.

  • Enclosure: Terrestrial setup with deep substrate and ample floor space
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • Humidity: Moderate (60–70%) with one slightly moist area and the remainder kept relatively dry
  • Decor: Cork bark, rocks, starter burrows, and webbing anchor points

Feeding

A fast and enthusiastic predator, the Socotra Island Blue Baboon readily accepts a variety of live insects.

  • Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, mealworms, and other appropriately sized live insects
  • Feeding frequency:
    • Spiderlings/Juveniles: 2–3 times per week
    • Adults: 1–2 times per week
  • Remove uneaten prey to maintain a clean enclosure

General Care

This is an Old World species and is best suited to experienced keepers due to its speed and defensive nature.

  • Temperament: Fast, defensive, and highly active
  • Handling: Not recommended
  • Venom: Potent, as with other Old World tarantulas, so caution should always be exercised
  • Lifespan:
    • Females: 12–15 years
    • Males: 4–6 years
  • Maintenance: Provide good ventilation, stable temperatures, and allow the spider to establish extensive webbing and burrows
