Description
Snake Pipefish (Corythoichthys spp. / Snake Pipefish)
A delicate and fascinating marine species, the Snake Pipefish is known for its long, slender body and subtle camouflage patterns that resemble seagrass or coral branches. Closely related to seahorses, it is a peaceful and highly specialised fish best suited to experienced marine aquarists.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Must be kept with very calm, non-aggressive tankmates such as small gobies, pipefish-safe shrimp, and peaceful wrasses. Avoid all aggressive or fast-feeding fish that will outcompete it for food.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates. In fact, a reef environment with natural hitching posts like macroalgae and branching coral is ideal.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds almost exclusively on small live foods such as copepods and amphipods. Some individuals may be trained onto enriched frozen foods like mysis shrimp, but success varies. Frequent small feedings are essential.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 100L (preferably mature and well-established)
Care Level:
Advanced – very sensitive and highly specialised feeder. Requires a mature aquarium with a strong pod population and extremely stable water conditions.
Top Tip:
Ensure a thriving copepod population before introduction. Avoid competition for food and provide plenty of natural hitching structures such as macroalgae or branching rockwork.
