Description
Tiger Serpent Starfish (Ophiolepis superba / Tiger Serpent Star)
The Tiger Serpent Starfish is a striking and highly beneficial marine scavenger, recognised for its boldly patterned central disc and long, banded arms. Nocturnal by nature, it spends the day hidden amongst the rockwork before emerging at night to search for detritus and leftover food, making it an excellent addition to a reef aquarium clean-up crew.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Compatible with most reef fish, corals, shrimp, snails, and other ornamental invertebrates. Best housed with peaceful tankmates that will not harass or prey upon starfish.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely safe with corals and reef invertebrates. An excellent scavenger that helps consume uneaten food and organic waste without damaging the aquarium ecosystem.
Diet:
Omnivore/Scavenger – feeds on detritus, uneaten food, and decaying organic matter. Supplement with small pieces of mysis shrimp, krill, chopped mussel, or other meaty marine foods 1–2 times per week if natural food is limited.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 100L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy once acclimated, but requires stable salinity and excellent water quality. Like all echinoderms, it is sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry and should always be drip acclimated.
Top Tip:
Acclimate slowly using a drip method to avoid osmotic shock. Provide plenty of rockwork with caves and crevices where the starfish can shelter during the day before emerging at night to forage naturally.
