Giant Seahare (Aplysia spp. / Giant Seahare)
A fascinating and unusual marine invertebrate, the Giant Seahare is known for its large, soft body, graceful swimming, and algae-grazing behaviour. It is a peaceful addition to aquariums, primarily serving as a natural algae cleaner.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Can be kept with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may harm it.
Reef Compatibility:
Mostly reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates. Best suited for tanks with plenty of macroalgae or detritus to feed on.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on algae, particularly macroalgae. Supplement with fresh or dried seaweed sheets if natural algae is insufficient.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 100L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires stable water conditions, plenty of algae for grazing, and a well-established aquarium.
Top Tip:
Provide ample algae or seaweed sheets for grazing. Avoid housing with aggressive or predatory tankmates. Their natural feeding behaviour can help control algae growth and adds an unusual, eye-catching species to your marine collection.
