Description
Scarlet Hawkfish (Neocirrhites armatus / Flame Hawkfish)
A bold and charismatic marine species, the Scarlet Hawkfish is instantly recognisable by its vivid red coloration and perch-like behaviour. Often seen resting on rockwork while watching its surroundings, this hardy fish adds both personality and striking colour to marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with moderately robust species such as tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and angelfish. Can become territorial toward smaller bottom-dwelling fish or similar perchers.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Harmless to corals, but may prey on small ornamental shrimp and tiny crustaceans. Larger cleaner shrimp are usually left alone once established.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy, adaptable, and suitable for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists. Requires stable water conditions and plenty of rockwork for perching and shelter.
Top Tip:
Provide elevated rock structures and caves, as hawkfish enjoy observing their surroundings from high vantage points. Avoid keeping with very small shrimp species that may be viewed as prey.
