Description

Salmon Pink Birdeater Tarantula (Lasiodora parahybana)

The Salmon Pink Birdeater is one of the largest tarantulas in the world, famous for its impressive size, fast growth, and striking pink hairs across its dark body. Native to Brazil, this giant New World species is a favourite among tarantula keepers looking for a bold and dramatic display animal. Despite its intimidating size, it is hardy and rewarding to keep with the right setup.

Habitat

In the wild, Lasiodora parahybana inhabits tropical forests and humid grasslands, where it lives in burrows or sheltered ground spaces.

  • Enclosure: Large terrestrial enclosure with plenty of floor space
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • Humidity: Moderate to high (65–75%)
  • Decor: Cork bark hides, starter burrows, and sturdy shelter areas

Feeding

A powerful and enthusiastic feeder, this species readily accepts a wide variety of live prey and grows quickly.

  • Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, mealworms, and larger insects; adults may take occasional larger prey items
  • Feeding frequency:
    • Spiderlings/Juveniles: 2–3 times per week
    • Adults: 1–2 times per week
  • Remove uneaten prey to prevent stress or injury

General Care

This species is hardy and fast-growing, making it popular with both intermediate and experienced keepers.

  • Temperament: Can be defensive and quick to flick urticating hairs
  • Handling: Not recommended due to size, speed, and hair flicking
  • Lifespan:
    • Females: 12–15+ years
    • Males: 3–5 years
  • Maintenance: Keep humidity stable with good ventilation and avoid overly wet conditions
