Description

Sailfin Tang – West Indian Ocean (Zebrasoma desjardinii / Desjardini Sailfin Tang)

A large and impressive marine species, the Sailfin Tang – West Indian Ocean is known for its striking striped pattern and expansive dorsal and anal fins that resemble a “sail” when fully extended. Its bold appearance and active swimming make it a true centrepiece in larger aquariums.

Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as tangs, angelfish, and wrasses. Can be territorial with other tangs, particularly similar-shaped species. Avoid very small or timid fish.

Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and most invertebrates, though may occasionally graze on algae around coral bases.

Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Provide a varied diet including algae sheets, spirulina flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based frozen foods. Feed multiple times daily to support growth and health.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–27°C
  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Minimum Tank Size: 500L

Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated, but requires a large, mature aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of swimming space.

Top Tip:
Provide ample open swimming space along with live rock for grazing. Introduce carefully when keeping with other tangs to minimise territorial disputes. A consistent algae-rich diet is key to maintaining its impressive finnage and overall health.
