Sailfin Tang – Melanesia (Zebrasoma veliferum / Pacific Sailfin Tang)
The Melanesian Sailfin Tang is a spectacular and imposing surgeonfish, recognised for its enormous sail-like dorsal and anal fins and beautifully patterned body of alternating dark bands, pale stripes, and yellow highlights. When fully displaying its fins, this impressive tang becomes a true centrepiece for large marine and reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Generally compatible with robust marine species such as angelfish, wrasses, clownfish, butterflyfish, and other suitably sized community fish. Can become territorial towards other tangs, particularly other Zebrasoma species, so plenty of space is essential.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Safe with corals and most ornamental invertebrates. Its constant grazing behaviour can also make it a useful addition for controlling nuisance algae in established reef systems.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae and other plant material. Offer dried nori, marine algae, spirulina-based flakes and pellets, and vegetable-rich frozen foods. Occasional meaty foods such as mysis may also be taken. Feed 2–3 times daily, with regular access to grazing foods.

Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once established but requires a large, mature aquarium with excellent filtration, high oxygenation, strong water movement, and extensive open swimming space.
Top Tip:
Sailfin Tangs grow into substantial fish with extremely tall fins, so aquarium dimensions are just as important as overall volume. Provide plenty of unobstructed swimming room alongside established rockwork for grazing, and plan for its large adult size from the outset.
