Description
Brown Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma scopas / Scopas Tang)
A hardy and adaptable marine species, the Brown Sailfin Tang—also known as the Scopas Tang—is recognised for its subtle brown coloration with lighter patterning and sail-like fins. While less flashy than other tangs, it is an excellent algae grazer and a reliable addition to marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as wrasses, angelfish, and larger peaceful fish. Can be territorial with other tangs, particularly similar-shaped species. Avoid very small or timid fish.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Will not harm corals or invertebrates, making it suitable for reef aquariums.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Provide a varied diet including algae sheets, spirulina flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based frozen foods. Feed regularly to maintain health and reduce aggression.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 300L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy and adaptable, making it a good choice for both intermediate and experienced aquarists. Requires stable water conditions and adequate swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and open swimming areas. Regular feeding of algae-based foods helps reduce territorial behaviour and keeps the fish in optimal condition.
