Description

Sacred Scarab Beetle (Scarabaeus sacer)

The Sacred Scarab Beetle is one of the world's most iconic beetle species, revered since ancient Egypt as a symbol of renewal and transformation. Recognised for its glossy black body and fascinating dung-rolling behaviour, this hardy beetle is both an intriguing display animal and a unique addition to any invertebrate collection.

Habitat

Native to North Africa, Southern Europe, and parts of the Middle East, Sacred Scarab Beetles thrive in warm, dry environments with plenty of substrate for digging.

  • Enclosure: Well-ventilated terrestrial enclosure with ample floor space
  • Temperature: 24–30°C
  • Humidity: Low to moderate (40–60%)
  • Decor: Deep substrate, bark, rocks, and natural hiding places for burrowing

Feeding

In the wild, Sacred Scarab Beetles feed primarily on herbivore dung, which also serves as a food source for their larvae.

  • Diet: Herbivore dung (such as rabbit, horse, or cow), along with occasional fresh fruit for supplementary nutrition
  • Feeding frequency: Fresh food should be provided regularly and removed before it spoils
  • Always maintain a clean enclosure to promote healthy conditions

General Care

These beetles are hardy and relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for keepers interested in observing natural behaviours.

  • Temperament: Peaceful and active, particularly during the evening
  • Handling: Gentle handling is possible but should be kept to a minimum
  • Lifespan: Around 1–2 years depending on care and breeding cycle
  • Maintenance: Keep the enclosure clean, warm, and provide sufficient substrate for digging and nesting

Why Choose a Sacred Scarab Beetle?

  • Famous for its historical significance and unique behaviour
  • Fascinating to watch as it burrows and forms dung balls
  • Hardy and easy to maintain
  • A unique display species unlike any other beetle

The Sacred Scarab Beetle is an extraordinary invertebrate that combines ancient history with remarkable natural behaviour, making it a truly captivating addition to any exotic collection.
