Description
Regal Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus / Blue Tang)
A vibrant and iconic marine species, the Regal Tang is instantly recognisable by its bright blue body, black patterning, and vivid yellow tail. Popularised by its striking appearance and active swimming behaviour, it is a standout addition to larger reef and community aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with other non-aggressive or moderately robust species such as clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and angelfish. Can be territorial with other tangs, especially in smaller tanks.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it ideal for reef systems.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on both algae and small meaty foods. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina flakes or pellets, and frozen foods such as mysis shrimp. Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once established, but requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide ample open swimming areas along with live rock for grazing. Regular feeding and high water quality are key to maintaining its bright blue and yellow coloration.
