Description
Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus)
A truly stunning and highly sought-after marine species, the Regal Angelfish is renowned for its vibrant yellow, blue, and white vertical stripes, along with its elegant swimming behaviour. A showpiece fish, it brings exceptional colour and presence to larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with peaceful to moderately robust species such as tangs, wrasses, and larger clownfish. Avoid aggressive tankmates and other angelfish unless the tank is very large. Can be shy during acclimation.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. May nip at soft corals, sponges, and some sessile invertebrates. Best suited to carefully selected reef setups or fish-only systems.
Diet:
Omnivore – requires a varied diet including sponge-based foods, marine algae, and small meaty items such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp. High-quality angelfish preparations are recommended. Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain health and colouration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Advanced – can be delicate, especially during acclimation. Requires a mature aquarium with stable water parameters and plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.
Top Tip:
Introduce into a well-established tank with plenty of hiding spaces. Offer a varied diet including sponge-based foods early on to encourage feeding and long-term success.
