Red Tailed Giant Gourami – A Majestic Centerpiece with Striking Color
(Osphronemus laticlavius)
The Red Tailed Giant Gourami (Osphronemus laticlavius) is a truly impressive freshwater fish, known for its large size, bold personality, and distinctive red-tipped tail and fin highlights. Native to Borneo and extremely rare in the aquarium trade, this species is a show-stopping choice for experienced aquarists with the space to house a truly majestic fish.
Key Features:
-
Vibrant Red Accents: Its soft grey to blue body is dramatically contrasted by vivid red-orange on the tail and fins, developing richer hues with age.
-
Massive Size & Presence: One of the largest gourami species, it can grow up to 40–50 cm (16–20 inches), making it an incredible centerpiece for large tanks or indoor ponds.
-
Intelligent & Interactive: Known for its awareness and interaction with owners—can even learn to recognize you and hand-feed.
-
Rare and Sought-After: Far less common than the standard Giant Gourami, making it a prized addition for serious hobbyists.
Tank Compatibility:
-
Best kept solo or with similarly large, peaceful species such as large catfish, bichirs, or arowanas
-
Avoid small tankmates, which may be mistaken for food
-
Needs a tank of at least 500 liters (130+ gallons) with strong filtration and ample swimming space
Care Requirements:
-
Temperature: 24°C–30°C (75°F–86°F)
-

Moderately soft to moderately hard water
-
Large tank or pond with open swimming areas, hiding spots, and a secure lid (they can jump!)
Feeding Tips:
-
Omnivorous—enjoys high-quality pellets, leafy greens (like spinach or lettuce), fruits, and occasional protein-rich foods like shrimp or worms
-
Avoid fatty or overly rich foods to prevent health issues
