Red Spotted Milk Frog (Trachycephalus sp.)
The Red Spotted Milk Frog is a striking tropical tree frog, admired for its attractive spotted patterning, chunky appearance, and fascinating nocturnal behaviour. These arboreal frogs spend much of their time climbing amongst branches and foliage, making them an excellent display species for a planted tropical terrarium.
Habitat
Red Spotted Milk Frogs require a warm, humid, arboreal environment with plenty of vertical climbing opportunities.
- Enclosure: Tall, well-ventilated arboreal terrarium
- Temperature: Around 24–28°C during the day with a slight drop at night
- Humidity: Moderate to high, around 60–80%
- Lighting: A natural day/night cycle should be provided, with suitable UVB lighting beneficial
- Decor: Branches, cork bark, vines, live or artificial plants, and elevated resting areas
- Fresh, dechlorinated water should always be available
Feeding
Red Spotted Milk Frogs are insectivorous and readily hunt a variety of appropriately sized live foods.
- Diet: Crickets, locusts, roaches, flies and other suitable live insects
- Juveniles: Feed smaller meals more frequently while growing
- Adults: Usually feed 2–3 times per week
- Feeder insects should be appropriately gut-loaded and supplemented with calcium and vitamins
General Care
These frogs are best enjoyed as display animals, particularly during the evening when they become more active.
- Temperament: Generally calm but can be quick when disturbed
- Activity: Primarily nocturnal and arboreal
- Handling: Minimal handling is recommended to protect their sensitive skin
