Description

Red Phantom Tetra (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) – A Stunning Splash of Red for Your Aquarium

The Red Phantom Tetra (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) is a striking freshwater fish known for its brilliant red-orange coloration, which shines through beautifully in well-maintained aquariums. This medium-sized tetra, with its bold and dynamic coloring, adds a touch of vibrancy and energy to any tank. Its sleek body and peaceful nature make it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking to enhance the visual appeal of their community aquarium.

Native to the slow-moving waters of South America, the Red Phantom Tetra is found in the rivers and streams of the Amazon Basin. It thrives in schools and appreciates a well-planted environment with gentle water flow. Whether swimming in groups or exploring the tank, the Red Phantom Tetra adds color and liveliness, creating a dynamic focal point in any aquatic setup.

Key Features & Care Guidelines:

  • Brilliant Red Coloration: The Red Phantom Tetra is known for its striking red-orange body, which becomes more intense when the fish is healthy and happy. The vibrant coloration, paired with the transparent fins, creates a visually stunning effect, particularly under aquarium lighting.

  • Behavior: Peaceful and social; best kept in schools of 6 or more to reduce stress and allow for natural schooling behavior. These tetras are active swimmers and do well when they have space to move freely and interact with their school.

  • Tank Size: Minimum 15 gallons recommended for a small school, though larger tanks are ideal for providing more space and water stability. The Red Phantom Tetra enjoys well-planted aquariums with ample swimming areas.

  • Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and temperatures from 72°F to 80°F (22°C to 27°C). Gentle filtration and moderate water flow will help maintain the fish's vibrant coloration and overall health.

  • Diet: Omnivorous; accepts a variety of foods including high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen offerings such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A well-rounded diet helps enhance their vibrant color and overall vitality.

  • Tank Setup: Ideal for densely planted aquariums with soft, moderate lighting. Dense plants provide hiding spots, while open swimming areas allow the Red Phantom Tetra to display its natural behavior. A slightly dim environment brings out the best in its red hues.

  • Experience Level: Hardy and adaptable, making the Red Phantom Tetra a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Its peaceful nature makes it compatible with other non-aggressive species in community tanks.

The Red Phantom Tetra (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) is a lively and colorful addition to any aquarium. Whether swimming in schools or gliding through plants, its fiery red coloration and peaceful temperament create a vibrant atmosphere in any community tank.
