Description
Red Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus / Mandarin Dragonet)
A vibrant and captivating marine species, the Red Mandarin is instantly recognisable by its intricate red, orange, and blue patterns. Its peaceful nature and fascinating “hunting” behaviour make it a standout in reef and community aquariums, though it requires a mature tank with established live foods.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with other non-aggressive species such as gobies, blennies, and small peaceful tangs. Avoid large or aggressive fish that may outcompete it for food.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it ideal for live rock and reef setups.
Diet:
Carnivore – primarily feeds on live copepods and other small microfauna. May accept frozen mysis shrimp or finely chopped seafood if well-acclimated, but requires a mature aquarium with abundant live food populations. Feed small amounts multiple times per day.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Advanced – requires a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock and stable water conditions. Sensitive to poor water quality and inadequate food supply.
Top Tip:
Provide a mature reef with abundant copepods or live rock to sustain feeding. Introduce only into an established tank to ensure survival and encourage natural foraging behaviour.
