Description
Red Leg Hermit Crab (Clibanarius digueti / Red Leg Hermit Crab)
A hardy and hardworking member of the marine clean-up crew, the Red Leg Hermit Crab is valued for its bright red legs, active behaviour, and excellent algae-grazing abilities. Constantly scavenging throughout the aquarium, it helps keep rockwork and substrate clean while adding interest to reef systems.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Compatible with most reef fish, corals, and invertebrates. May occasionally compete with other hermit crabs or snails for shells if suitable spare shells are not available.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Excellent for reef aquariums, helping to control algae, detritus, and uneaten food without harming corals.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on algae, detritus, leftover food, and organic matter. Will also accept algae wafers, marine pellets, and occasional meaty foods when available.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 40L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy, adaptable, and suitable for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists.
Top Tip:
Always provide a variety of empty shells in different sizes. This helps reduce competition within the aquarium and prevents the crab from targeting snails for new housing.
