Description
Red Foxface (Siganus magnificus)
A striking and peaceful marine species, the Red Foxface is instantly recognisable by its vivid yellow and red body, black facial mask, and elegant swimming behaviour. Known for its hardy nature and grazing habits, it is an excellent addition to larger reef and community aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with other non-aggressive or moderately robust species such as tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and gobies. Avoid very small or delicate fish that may be stressed. Can become territorial with other foxfaces in smaller tanks.
Reef Compatibility:
Mostly reef-safe. Primarily herbivorous, grazing on algae, but may occasionally nip at soft corals. Best suited for tanks with plenty of algae-covered rock and open swimming space.
Diet:
Herbivore – feeds mainly on marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with spirulina-based flakes, algae sheets, or high-quality herbivore pellets. Feed daily or multiple times per day to support vibrant colouration and health.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 250L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy and adaptable, but benefits from stable water conditions, mature tanks, and adequate grazing opportunities.
Top Tip:
Provide live rock covered with algae and open swimming areas. Avoid aggressive tankmates, and ensure a varied herbivore diet to maintain vibrant colour and natural grazing behaviour.
