Description
Queen Wrasse (Thalassoma schwanenfeldii)
The Queen Wrasse is a striking and highly active marine wrasse, displaying vibrant green, blue and reddish colouration that becomes increasingly impressive as the fish matures. With its bold personality and constant movement around the aquarium, this species makes an impressive addition to larger fish-only and robust marine systems.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. Best kept with confident, similarly sized tankmates such as tangs, larger angelfish, triggerfish and other robust wrasses. Smaller, peaceful or timid species may be harassed, particularly by established adults.
Reef Compatibility:
Not considered fully reef-safe. While corals are generally not its main target, it will hunt shrimp, crabs, snails, worms and other mobile invertebrates.
Diet:
Carnivore – offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, krill, chopped prawn, mussel, cockle, clam, squid and quality marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily, providing a varied and nutritious diet.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – generally hardy and an enthusiastic feeder once established, but requires excellent filtration, strong water movement and plenty of open swimming space.
Top Tip:
Queen Wrasses are extremely active and powerful swimmers, so prioritise aquarium length and open swimming space rather than simply overall volume. Provide substantial rockwork for exploration and ensure the aquarium has a tightly fitting lid, as they are capable jumpers.
