Description

Purple Vampire Crab – A Colorful, Unique Crustacean for Your Aquarium
(Geosesarma sp.)

The Purple Vampire Crab (Geosesarma sp.) is an exotic and captivating species, known for its vivid purple coloration and striking red eyes that give it a "vampire" look. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, this hardy and beautiful crab is perfect for aquarists seeking an eye-catching addition to their tanks. With its active and inquisitive nature, the Purple Vampire Crab is not only a visual delight but also a fun and fascinating creature to observe.

Key Features:

  • Stunning Purple Coloration: Dark purple body with contrasting red eyes, making it a true gem in any freshwater or brackish aquarium

  • Compact Size: Grows up to 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches), perfect for nano or small to medium-sized tanks

  • Energetic and Playful: Known for its climbing abilities and inquisitive nature, often seen exploring rocks, plants, and hiding spots

  • Hardy and Resilient: Adaptable to various water conditions, though a slightly brackish environment is ideal

Tank Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 40 liters (10 gallons) for a small group

  • Temperature: 24°C–28°C (75°F–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)

  • Prefers a slightly brackish environment with a low concentration of salt (ideal for mimicking its natural habitat)

  • Requires plenty of hiding spots such as caves, rocks, and driftwood to feel secure

  • Secure tank lid is a must, as these crabs are known to climb and potentially escape

Compatibility:

  • Peaceful but Territorial: Best kept with other small, non-aggressive fish and inverts

  • Ideal tankmates include small tetras, livebearers, peaceful cichlids, and other small peaceful crustaceans

  • Avoid keeping with large, predatory fish that may stress or harm the crabs

  • Can be kept in small groups if enough space is provided, but territorial disputes may arise if there are too few hiding spots

Feeding Tips:

  • Omnivorous—feeds on a variety of foods, including plant matter, algae, live or frozen worms, and small insects

  • Will also accept sinking pellets, algae wafers, and small bits of blanched vegetables like spinach and zucchini

  • Feed 2–3 times a week, offering small portions to avoid overfeeding
