Description
Purple Firefish (Nemateleotris exquisita / Exquisite Firefish)
A rare and visually striking marine species, the Purple Firefish (Exquisite Firefish) is known for its vibrant purple and lavender body, elongated dorsal fin, and elegant hovering behaviour. Its shy yet curious nature makes it a captivating addition to reef and community aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with other non-aggressive species such as gobies, blennies, clownfish, and small tangs. Avoid large or aggressive tankmates that may stress or bully it.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it ideal for live rock and reef setups.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Will also accept high-quality marine pellets and flakes. Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions to maintain colour and activity.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated, but requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of hiding spots.
Top Tip:
Provide live rock or small crevices for retreat, as this species prefers to hover near cover. Multiple small feedings daily help maintain bright colours and encourage natural hovering behaviour.
