Description
Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternon)
One of the most iconic and visually striking tangs in the marine hobby, the Powder Blue Tang is renowned for its electric blue body, contrasting yellow dorsal fin, and jet-black face mask. Its active swimming and vibrant colours make it a standout centerpiece in large reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust fish such as tangs, angelfish, and large wrasse. Avoid small, timid, or slow-moving species, as they may be stressed or harassed. Territorial behaviour is common in smaller tanks.
Reef Compatibility:
Generally reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates but requires caution when mixing with very small or shy fish due to semi-aggressive tendencies.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily grazes on algae. Offer a varied diet of marine algae, spirulina flakes or pellets, and occasional frozen or dried vegetable matter. Multiple feedings daily maintain vibrant coloration and promote healthy growth.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 600L
Care Level:
Advanced – sensitive to poor water quality and requires a well-established aquarium with ample swimming space and stable conditions.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of live rock and open swimming areas to mimic natural grazing behaviour. Introduce into a mature tank to reduce stress and allow the fish to establish territory. Frequent feeding of algae-rich foods helps maintain bright, electric colours.
