Pitho Crab (Pitho sp. / Pitho Crab)
A fascinating and highly useful marine invertebrate, the Pitho Crab is prized for its algae-grazing abilities and unusual appearance. With its rounded body and strong claws, it is an excellent member of a reef clean-up crew, helping to control nuisance algae while remaining entertaining to observe.
Compatibility:
Generally peaceful. Suitable for reef aquariums with fish, corals, and most invertebrates. Larger individuals may occasionally become opportunistic feeders if insufficient food is available.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Widely regarded as reef-safe and particularly effective at consuming nuisance algae, including bubble algae and hair algae. As with most crabs, behaviour can vary between individuals.
Diet:
Omnivore – primarily feeds on algae, detritus, and organic matter. Supplement with algae wafers, marine pellets, and occasional meaty foods if natural food sources become limited.

- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 60L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy, adaptable, and suitable for most established marine and reef aquariums.
Top Tip:
An excellent addition to clean-up crews for controlling nuisance algae. Ensure a varied food source is available, especially in very clean aquariums, to prevent opportunistic feeding on other tank inhabitants.
