Description
Pinktail Wrasse (Halichoeres chrysotaenia / Pinktail Wrasse)
A beautiful and active reef-compatible wrasse, the Pinktail Wrasse is admired for its vibrant pink to reddish tail, colourful body markings, and constant foraging behaviour. Hardy and energetic, it is an excellent addition to established reef and community marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally compatible with clownfish, gobies, blennies, tangs, angelfish, and other non-aggressive wrasses. May become territorial towards similar Halichoeres species in smaller aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Safe with corals but may prey on small ornamental shrimp, flatworms, bristleworms, feather dusters, and other tiny invertebrates. Often valued for helping control nuisance pests.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on small crustaceans, worms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily for optimal health and coloration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 250L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy once established but requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions, plenty of swimming space, and a sandy substrate for natural behaviour.
Top Tip:
Provide a fine sand bed, as Pinktail Wrasses bury themselves when sleeping or startled. A secure lid is essential, as this species is an excellent jumper and can easily leave an uncovered aquarium.
