Pictus Catfish – Sleek, Active, and Stunning Bottom-Dweller for Your Aquarium

Add an energetic and visually striking species to your aquarium with the Pictus Catfish (Pimelodus pictus). Known for its sleek, silver body adorned with dark spots and long, flowing barbels, the Pictus Catfish is a favorite among aquarists for its active nature and fascinating appearance. This species, native to South American rivers, is a beautiful addition to community tanks and provides plenty of movement and excitement.

The Pictus Catfish is an energetic swimmer, spending much of its time darting through the water or skimming the bottom in search of food. Despite its playful nature, it is a peaceful species that coexists well with other non-aggressive fish. As a bottom-feeder, it helps keep your aquarium clean by scavenging leftover food, detritus, and small invertebrates.

Its stunning coloration and lively behavior make it a captivating centerpiece, while its hardy and adaptable nature ensures it thrives in a variety of aquarium setups.

Key Features:

  • Striking Appearance: Sleek silver body with black spots, long whisker-like barbels, and a streamlined body make it a beautiful and unique addition

  • Energetic & Playful: Known for its lively swimming style and darting movements, bringing excitement to your aquarium

  • Peaceful & Social: Great for community tanks, this catfish gets along well with most non-aggressive species

  • Bottom Feeder: Actively searches for food at the substrate level, helping to clean up uneaten food and organic matter

Care Guidelines:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 gallons for a group of 3 or more (as they are active swimmers)

  • Water Temp: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

  • pH Range: 6.5–7.5

  • Diet: Omnivorous – feeds on sinking pellets, live or frozen foods (brine shrimp, bloodworms), and occasional plant matter

  • Lifespan: 5–8 years with proper care

Tip: The Pictus Catfish is an active species that requires plenty of swimming space. Provide a soft, sandy substrate to protect its delicate barbels and plenty of hiding spots using plants or caves. A well-aerated tank with moderate water flow is ideal to replicate its natural riverine habitat.

The Pictus Catfish is a visually stunning, active, and easy-to-care-for species that will be the highlight of your freshwater tank. Its lively nature, beautiful appearance, and helpful bottom-feeding habits make it an excellent choice for a variety of aquarium setups.
