Description
Otocinclus Affinis – The Tiny, Efficient Algae Eater for Your Aquarium
Meet the Otocinclus affinis, commonly known as the Otto Catfish or Dwarf Suckerfish—a small, hardworking, and peaceful algae-eater that is perfect for maintaining a clean and healthy freshwater tank. This tiny catfish is renowned for its ability to tackle algae without harming your plants or other tank inhabitants, making it an excellent addition to aquariums of all sizes, especially planted tanks.
With its sleek, torpedo-shaped body and charming behavior, the Otocinclus affinis brings both function and beauty to your aquarium. It grows to only about 2 inches (5 cm), making it a perfect choice for nano tanks or community aquariums with peaceful fish. Its gentle nature allows it to thrive alongside a wide variety of species, making it an ideal companion in a well-balanced ecosystem.
The Otocinclus affinis is most famous for its algae-eating habits, consuming biofilm, green spot algae, and other forms of organic matter that build up on tank surfaces, plants, and decorations. Despite its small size, this little pleco does a big job when it comes to keeping your tank clean!
Key Features:
-
Efficient Algae Eater: Known for its ability to clean algae from tank surfaces, including glass, plants, and decorations
-
Small & Peaceful: At only 2 inches long, it is ideal for small tanks, planted tanks, and peaceful community setups
-
Gentle & Non-Aggressive: A calm fish that coexists beautifully with other peaceful species, adding a tranquil vibe to your aquarium
-
Hardy & Easy to Care For: A resilient species that thrives in a variety of water conditions, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists
Care Guidelines:
-
Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons for a small group (3 or more)
-
Water Temp: 72–79°F (22–26°C)
-
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
-
Diet: Herbivorous – primarily algae, but also enjoys occasional algae wafers, blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach), and biofilm from tank surfaces
-
Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care
Tip: Since Otocinclus affinis is a social fish, it thrives best in small schools of at least 3 to 5 individuals. Make sure your tank has plenty of surfaces with algae to graze on, especially in the early stages of the tank’s life. Providing live plants will not only support their diet but also offer additional grazing opportunities and hiding places.
The Otocinclus affinis is a natural, efficient, and visually appealing addition to any freshwater tank. Its peaceful nature, small size, and algae-cleaning abilities make it a perfect choice for maintaining a pristine tank while adding life and movement to the lower levels of your aquarium.
