The Northern Blue Tongue Skink is a chunky, charismatic Australian lizard famous for its brilliant blue tongue, sturdy build, and inquisitive personality. Generally calm and easy to manage once settled, this species makes a fantastic pet for both newer and experienced reptile keepers who can provide the correct setup and long-term care.
Habitat
Native to the warm, tropical regions of northern Australia, Northern Blue Tongue Skinks are primarily terrestrial and require plenty of floor space to explore, hide, and bask.
- Enclosure: Spacious, secure terrestrial vivarium with plenty of floor space
- Basking Temperature: Around 35–40°C
- Cool Side: Around 24–27°C
- Humidity: Moderate, around 40–60%, with access to a humid hide
- Lighting: High-quality UVB lighting is recommended
- Decor: Cork bark, sturdy hides, rocks, logs, and other enrichment for exploring
- Fresh drinking water should always be available
Feeding
Northern Blue Tongue Skinks are omnivorous and thrive on a varied, balanced diet.
- Diet: Suitable insects, leafy greens, vegetables, small amounts of fruit, eggs, snails, and quality prepared foods
- Juveniles: Require more frequent feeding with a higher proportion of animal-based protein
- Adults: Generally require a greater proportion of vegetables and greens alongside suitable protein sources
- Calcium and vitamin supplements should be provided as appropriate
A varied diet is important for maintaining good condition and avoiding obesity.

Northern Blue Tongue Skinks are hardy, intelligent reptiles that can become very comfortable around their keepers with patient, regular interaction.

- Lifespan: Around 15–20+ years with proper care
- Maintenance: Regular cleaning, correct heating and UVB, fresh water, and plenty of enrichment are essential
