Description
Naoko's Dwarf Parrot (Scarus hoefleri / Naoko's Dwarf Parrotfish)
A rare and beautifully coloured marine fish, Naoko's Dwarf Parrotfish is admired for its vibrant mix of pink, orange, green, and blue hues. Smaller than many parrotfish species, it is an active and constantly grazing fish that makes a unique addition to large, mature marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally compatible with tangs, wrasses, angelfish, butterflyfish, clownfish, and other peaceful to moderately robust marine species. Best housed with non-aggressive tankmates that won't outcompete it for food.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. While generally peaceful, it may graze on coralline algae and occasionally nip at coral surfaces as part of its natural feeding behaviour. It is better suited to fish-only systems or mixed reefs where minor grazing is acceptable.
Diet:
Herbivore/Omnivore – primarily grazes on algae and biofilm. Offer a varied diet including marine algae, nori, spirulina-based pellets, vegetable-based frozen foods, and occasional mysis shrimp or other meaty foods. Feed 2–3 times daily to support its active grazing lifestyle.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions, abundant live rock for grazing, strong water movement, and plenty of open swimming space.
Top Tip:
A mature aquarium with plenty of natural algae and biofilm is key to long-term success. Supplement natural grazing with algae-based foods to keep this colourful parrotfish in excellent condition and maintain its vibrant colours.
