Description

Mozambique Golden Baboon Tarantula (Harpactira pulchripes)

The Mozambique Golden Baboon Tarantula is a spectacular African tarantula known for its vivid golden-yellow legs, contrasting dark body and striking blue-grey to metallic tones. This impressive Old World species is an active burrower and enthusiastic feeder, making it a fantastic display tarantula. Its speed and defensive nature, however, mean it is best suited to experienced tarantula keepers.

Habitat

The Mozambique Golden Baboon is a terrestrial to fossorial species that naturally spends much of its time in and around burrows.

  • Enclosure: Secure terrestrial enclosure with plenty of depth for burrowing
  • Temperature: Approximately 24–28°C
  • Humidity: Low to moderate, with good ventilation and access to a slightly more humid retreat
  • Decor: Cork bark, rocks and other natural cover can provide shelter and webbing anchor points
  • Provide sufficient depth for the construction of extensive burrows
  • Avoid excessively wet or stagnant conditions
  • A dish of clean, fresh water should always be available

Feeding

Harpactira pulchripes is an enthusiastic predator and typically displays an excellent feeding response.

  • Diet: Crickets, locusts, roaches, mealworms and other appropriately sized live insects
  • Spiderlings/Juveniles: Offer appropriately sized prey around 2–3 times per week
  • Adults: Generally feed around once per week depending on size and body condition
  • Remove uneaten prey, particularly when the tarantula appears to be approaching a moult
  • Fresh water should always be available

General Care

As an Old World tarantula, Harpactira pulchripes does not possess urticating hairs and instead relies on speed, defensive behaviour and venom when threatened.

  • Temperament: Fast, alert and potentially defensive
  • Handling: Not recommended
  • Venom: Medically significant effects are possible, and bites should be avoided
  • Adult Size: Approximately 12–15cm leg span
  • Lifespan: Females can potentially live around 10–15+ years, while males typically have considerably shorter lifespans
  • Activity: An enthusiastic burrower that may also produce considerable webbing around its retreat
  • Maintenance: Exercise care during feeding and enclosure maintenance due to the species' speed and defensive capabilities

Why Choose a Mozambique Golden Baboon Tarantula?

  • Spectacular golden-yellow legs
  • Beautiful contrasting blue-grey and dark colouration
  • Excellent feeding response
  • Fascinating burrowing and webbing behaviour
  • Impressive Old World display species
