Mimic Tang – Red Stripe (Acanthurus pyroferus / Mimic Surgeonfish – Red Sea / Indo variant)
A fascinating and adaptable marine species, the Red Stripe Mimic Tang is known for its ability to mimic juvenile angelfish patterns in the wild. With its streamlined body and subtle reddish striping, it develops into a beautiful and understated adult surgeonfish that adds movement and utility to large marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as wrasses, clownfish, angelfish, and other tangs in suitably large aquariums. Can become territorial toward similar surgeonfish, especially in smaller systems.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely safe with corals and invertebrates and highly beneficial for algae control in reef systems.
Diet:
Herbivore – feeds primarily on marine algae and detritus. Provide algae sheets, spirulina-based flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based frozen foods. Feed 2–3 times daily for best condition.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 450L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once established but requires a mature aquarium with stable water quality, strong oxygenation, and ample swimming space.
Top Tip:
Best introduced into an established system with plenty of live rock for grazing. Provide a varied algae-rich diet to maintain health and reduce territorial behaviour with other tangs.
