Description
Mimic Tang – Half Black (Acanthurus pyroferus)
A fascinating and visually striking marine species, the Mimic Tang – Half Black is known for its unique colour-changing ability. Juveniles display a black body with a bright yellow tail, mimicking the poisonous Mimic Filefish, while adults transition to a half-black, half-yellow pattern, making them a dynamic and captivating addition to larger aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as tangs, angelfish, and large wrasse. Avoid small, timid, or slow-moving fish that may be harassed. Can be territorial, particularly in smaller tanks.
Reef Compatibility:
Generally reef-safe. Does not harm corals or invertebrates but may graze on algae.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily grazes on marine algae. Offer a varied diet of spirulina-based flakes or pellets, fresh marine algae, and occasional frozen or dried vegetable matter. Multiple feedings per day maintain vibrant coloration and health.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters and plenty of swimming space. Sensitive to poor water quality.
Top Tip:
Provide live rock and open swimming areas to encourage natural grazing behaviour. Introducing the fish into a mature tank reduces stress and supports healthy development of its adult coloration.
