Mimic Filefish (Paraluteres prionurus)
A fascinating and highly unique marine species, the Mimic Filefish is best known for its remarkable resemblance to the poisonous Leatherjacket Filefish, featuring a slender body, subtle markings, and a distinctive black-and-yellow tail pattern. This clever mimicry helps it avoid predators in the wild and makes it a conversation starter in home aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with other non-aggressive species such as gobies, blennies, clownfish, and chromis. Avoid housing with large predatory fish that may mistake it for food. Can be shy initially, so provide a calm environment.
Reef Compatibility:
Generally reef-safe. Does not harm corals or invertebrates, making it suitable for live rock and reef setups.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on a variety of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Occasional algae-based foods are also beneficial. Feed small amounts multiple times daily.

Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated, but benefits from a well-established aquarium with hiding places and minimal aggressive tankmates.

Provide plenty of rockwork or caves for hiding. Mimic Filefish are most active and confident when kept in peaceful communities with ample open swimming space.
