Mexican Red Leg Tarantula (Brachypelma emilia)
The Mexican Red Leg Tarantula is a beautiful New World species, admired for its striking orange-red leg markings, dark body, and calm temperament. Native to the Pacific coast of Mexico, this slow-growing tarantula is renowned for its hardy nature and long lifespan, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced keepers.
Habitat
In the wild, Brachypelma emilia inhabits dry scrublands and tropical forests, where it spends much of its time in burrows or beneath natural cover.
- Enclosure: Terrestrial enclosure with ample floor space and a secure hide
- Temperature: 24–28°C
- Humidity: Moderate (60–70%) with good ventilation
- Decor: Cork bark hides, rocks, and webbing anchor points
Feeding
The Mexican Red Leg is a reliable feeder and readily accepts a variety of live insects.
- Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, mealworms, and other appropriately sized live insects

- Spiderlings/Juveniles: 2–3 times per week
- Adults: 1–2 times per week
- Remove uneaten prey after 24 hours to maintain a clean enclosure
General Care
This hardy species is easy to care for and is well known for its calm disposition, although all tarantulas should be treated with respect.
- Temperament: Generally calm and docile, though it may flick urticating hairs if disturbed
- Handling: Not recommended, but considered one of the more tolerant species
