Description
Masked Rabbitfish (Siganus puellus / Masked Spinefoot Rabbitfish)
A beautiful and active marine herbivore, the Masked Rabbitfish is recognised by its striking facial mask pattern, soft yellow and blue tones, and streamlined body. It is an excellent algae grazer and a useful addition to larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally compatible with tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and angelfish. Can become slightly territorial toward similar rabbitfish or tang-shaped species in smaller systems.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Primarily algae-eating, but may occasionally nip at soft corals or macroalgae in certain systems. Best monitored in mixed reefs.
Diet:
Herbivore – feeds mainly on marine algae. Provide algae sheets, spirulina flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based frozen foods. Feed 2–3 times daily for best health and colouration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy once established, but requires stable water conditions and plenty of swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide a varied algae-rich diet to prevent coral nipping behaviour. Ensure ample open swimming areas alongside live rock for grazing and shelter.
