Description
Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus / Maroon Clownfish)
The Maroon Clownfish is the largest and one of the most striking clownfish species available. With its rich maroon-red body and bold white or gold bands (depending on the variety), it is a true centrepiece fish. Renowned for its intelligence and personality, it is also one of the most territorial clownfish species.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. Best kept with robust tankmates such as tangs, larger wrasses, angelfish, and butterflyfish. Established pairs can become highly territorial, particularly when hosting an anemone. Avoid mixing with other clownfish species.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely safe with corals and most ornamental invertebrates. Will often form a symbiotic relationship with compatible host anemones, although one is not required for captive care.
Diet:
Omnivore – readily accepts high-quality marine pellets, flakes, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and other frozen marine foods. Feed 1–2 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 150L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy, adaptable, and suitable for aquarists of all experience levels. Tank-bred specimens are particularly resilient and readily accept prepared foods.
Top Tip:
Introduce Maroon Clownfish after more peaceful tankmates have established themselves, as they can become highly territorial once settled. Plenty of rockwork and defined territories will help reduce aggression and encourage natural behaviour.
