Description

Lemon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis) – A Burst of Sunny Color and Cheer

The Lemon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis) is a delightful and vibrant species known for its stunning, bright yellow coloration that resembles a glowing lemon. With its sleek body and shimmering fins, this peaceful and attractive tetra adds a refreshing pop of color to any freshwater aquarium. Whether swimming in groups or gliding through the plants, the Lemon Tetra’s cheerful appearance and lively personality make it a favorite among both novice and experienced aquarists.

Native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of South America, particularly the Amazon Basin, the Lemon Tetra thrives in schools and prefers soft, slightly acidic water. Its peaceful temperament and easy care requirements make it a fantastic choice for community tanks, where it can bring energy and color to the aquarium environment.

Key Features & Care Guidelines:

  • Vibrant Yellow Coloration: The Lemon Tetra is named for its brilliant yellow body that glows with an almost neon-like intensity, especially under proper lighting, making it a stunning centerpiece in your tank.

  • Behavior: Peaceful and social schooling fish; should be kept in groups of 6 or more to promote natural behavior and reduce stress. These tetras are active swimmers that add constant movement and liveliness to your aquarium.

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons recommended for a small school of Lemon Tetras, though larger tanks are ideal for a more dynamic and engaging display.

  • Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and temperatures from 74°F to 80°F (23°C to 27°C). Gentle water flow and clean, well-maintained water are essential for their health.

  • Diet: Omnivorous; accepts flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They thrive on a varied diet to maintain their vibrant coloration.

  • Tank Setup: Best in well-planted tanks with moderate lighting. Hiding spots and open swimming areas are recommended to encourage natural behavior and provide security for these gentle fish.

  • Experience Level: Hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for both beginner and more experienced aquarists.

The Lemon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis) is the perfect fish to brighten up your aquarium with its cheerful yellow hue and lively nature. Whether swimming in a group or gracefully exploring plants, these tetras bring both beauty and peaceful energy to any community tank.
